Arco Strings was formed in 2019 by members of the string section of Abingdon Community Orchestra.  Since then, the group has met biweekly during school term time and has played at weddings, parties, and concerts in and around Abingdon.

Arco is a mixed ability group with a focus on enjoying music together – any standard of musicianship is welcome.  Many of the group have returned to playing after a long gap.  Please note that there is no professional leader; the group members help and support each other.

 The group plays a wide range of music from the Renaissance to Radiohead, including classical works by Bach, Haydn, and Mozart as well as traditional Irish folk songs.  The inclusion criteria are that the tunes must be both satisfying to play and pleasurable to listen to.  Many of the pieces are suggestions from group members.  The music is available to download in advance.

The focus of the group continues to be string instruments, however non-transposing woodwinds are also welcome.

The group meets biweekly on Friday evenings at Abingdon Music Centre.
